The other day I was walking down Victoria Drive and someone had left some free junk on the sidewalk. There was a needlepoint of folksy looking woman appreciating a tree in a little gold wooden frame. I wanted the frame so I tool it. While I was at work that day a coworker saw me doodling the uge: skulls and glass and thought it looked like this. I thought that was cool so I drew it straight onto the piece of masonite that was in the frame from that morning. It turned out pretty sweet and now you can get it on a shirt if you go here in real life.

I painted this little guy up (8x10 wood panel) for a Christmas gift:

I like the way this drawing came out, but I would like to relate to you, dear readers, how badly I put this together. I'm typing this out, because I'm sure it's going to happen to someone else, and maybe they can learn from my mistakes. APPARENTLY WINDSOR & NEWTON BLACK INK AND GLOSS MEDIUM DON'T JIVE. As soon as I brushed a layer over my line work to seal it, it disintegrated like a temporary tattoo that was pulled off before it stuck. This lead to me putting way more time into this than I thought I would. Other than destroying my lines, this incompatibility left me without a good medium to redo my lines with. My acrylics are old and gross and not very smooth. I ended up mixing ink and acrylic to get an in-between-sticky ink. It worked mostly, was really inconsistent and still broke off in places. Sos anways, I think the moral of this painting parable is that I need to get a fixative, or some fluid acrylics I can line with, or stick to drawing with ink on paper.

So many unbelievable things have happened since my last post ages ago. Most recent: I drew this:

Less recently: I moved in with an awesome fella, managed to gain employment, acquired two sweet little rats, and I STARTED A TATTOO APPRENTICESHIP. YEAH, YOU READ IT. I'm extremely excited to be apprenticing at the Fall Tattooing! I've only been there a short while, so my experience hasn't been very art based yet, but when it starts to be, I'll be sure to document my progress. Tattooing has been a career goal of mine for quite some time, so this is a truly awesome opportunity for me. We'll see how it goes.
Also, a heads up, I'll be at Canzine West peddlin' my art wares, so come on over and say hi! I believe it's on Sunday, November 13th, but do check.

I saw a really cool Alice in Wonderland print in a shop the other day that had the caterpillar as a fancy gentlman and I kinda liked it. If I find out who did it I'll for sure add it to this post.

This is a book that I made while on exchange at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. It's a loose adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron. It's a map fold book in an envelop case. The case is screen printed and the pages are digitally printed.

So I just finished a term on exchange at the glasgow school of art, and this is one of the things I did:
it's a two colour screen printed book jacket for the selected poems of ezra pound.

I am not a master of screen printing. But this was fun. It took 30 prints to get 4 goodish ones. I blame the paper cutter in the studio. It's not straight at all.

Alright, so this has been a loong time coming. This little one has been in the works since the summer, and has changed so much along the way. I am quite happy with it though. I love making dolls because it combines many of my interests all into one: fashion, sewing, oddities, makeup, painting, hair, sculpture, character design, this one even includes book making!
They just take soooo much time to make. i love them though, this one has an unfinished sibling that may develop over the summer.

This little one has been hanging in The FALL Tattoo and artist gallery in downtown Vancouver for sometime. It was a participant in this year's Sumptuous Symposium, a lovely, lovely event.

So the other evening I was super lucky enough to participate in a group show curated by my friend Shwa, called the SUMPTUOUS SYMPOSIUM, and my, was it something:

This is a small book I made for an illustration class where we were supposed to illustrate a piece of music as a CD booklet. I chose to base mine on Tipper's shambahla downtempo set from 2005 (check it out it's awesome: soundcloud.com/christoff/tipper-shambhala-downtempo-set)

So, what I did was make a little dreamlike, ambiguous narrative based on the music and as the track unfolds so does the book. The first image is of the booklet folded up completely, and the second is both sides scanned unfolded. They are each original paintings on either side of the same piece of paper. Kinda neat. I will take better picture of it, so that this is easier to understand, it unfolds in an interesting way.

I did a drawring. A friend of mine likes it, that makes me glad. It's pencil crayons on gesso coated with acrylic medium. I'm not sure what the archival value of that combo is, but I guess we will see. It'll degrade when this kind of drawing is out of fashion.

I am sorry that my blogs been unactive for a while. I'll make it up (I hope) by showing you why:

The months of June and July are a blur to me because I went to work at a non profit arts organization called publicdreams.org/. Every year for the last twenty one years, there have been holding a lantern festival called, "illuminares". The last couple years have been a little different for this festival and this year especially was because it was the first time ever that the event was held indoors.

I had the privilege to design the poster for this event; an event with a history of gorgeous, well designed poster.
Along with that, Brianne Tweddle and I worked on a zine/viewbook of sorts that went along with this. Pictures of that to follow soon.

So this whole thing put my personal life and art on a back burner, so I have a lot of work ahead of me before the fall. I'll show you as I go.

Alright, so.

This is a comic I made for my final project in my illustration: narrative structures class. We had to adapt a story board we had previous drawn. I'll scan and post that one next time I'm at school, cause the end drawing are better than in this one. The story is by Michelle the Fever and I, co written in the purest sense.
The original script was a continuous shot the whole way through, so it made sense to do the comic in the same sense, with no panels and just straight through. It think besides drawing difficulties ( i should have never added half tones) it went well.

so BEWARE IF YOU HAVE A NOT-SO-GREAT COMPUTER! this image is HUGE. Like, it can go from the kitchen to the door of my apartment and around some more. It's easily like 18 feet long. I think.

what is with me and accordion books and trees.

I hope to print this out when I can straighten it out a bit, and make a half sized version, (because each two pages of the original is on 14x17" bristol) with a nice folding cover. it'd be cool.

this is a pronto plate, it's plastic lithographic process, easier than it sounds, but due to random happenings an lack of skill, it tool me over 20 attempts (that's on rag paper, not counting proofs of news print) to get an edition of six.

It's my latest papercut piece. I'm rather happy how this turned out, as it was an experiment in using floating frames with paper cutting.

If you are in Vancouver right now, this piece is hanging in the Freaks and Geeks show at the Fall Tattooing and Artist Gallery on Seymour street downtown. The show will be up from April 9th to the 30th. So go check it out. Lots of good things.

so so so, for a class this semester we had a super duper project where everyone in the class made a zine, and we traded! It was wonderful! And I think it means I'll be making more artist zines in the fuuuture.
Mine is titled Nautical Nonsense and was printed in an edition of 22 using a laser printer and a really basic lithography method called Pronto Plates.

This is a shot of all of the zines tiled together. Like I said there were 22 of them ( think one is missing from this image). The were printed on three different colours of rag paper, and the pages inside were printed on off white for the darker editions and white for the light editions. This shot shows the front and the back of the zines. each was about 2 x 3 inches folded. I love them, I think they are super cute.
that's why i'm uploading the ~~difficult badly designed~~ pattern so that if anyone feels so inclined they can have this zine too! I mean, without the printed cover of course.
These are the stickers that were inside the zine! I used a sewing machine to perforate them apart. I used a recipe for sticker glue I found on instructables.
so these two pages back to back as they are and make up the first page of the zine! They are the box that makes the diorama/zine/shrine, in the versions I made, the tabs we pre glued like the stickers. It's a bit wonky...you have to get breqative when putting this together and do what you have to to make sure it lines up. It's a bit tricky.
And these are the pieces that go inside! they also have the cryptic instructions!
and wouldn't ya know, it all folds into this:

an important note, you have to make your own hole on the side for the movable wave. Forgot to mention that.

It's been a busy time!

There was a really big shooo on friday night at the Fall tattooing and artist gallery! and guess what, I had some stuff in it.

Oh, Oh, you do me wrong

So I promised to show pictures from the steampunk show A LONG TIME AGO. So here we go. I only had three pieces in the show and I managed to rid myself of all of them! I was quite pleased and flattered. It was an excellent event. Here was my main deal:

Apologies for the image quality, it is an oil painting, so the luminosity just isn't the same as in real life or a darkly lit gallery. It glows internally and refracts light much better in real life.
This piece encompasses my idea of what steampunk it. It's not really the same, it's more catastrophic and post apocalyptic than an basic alternate history.
I'll make some comments about this piece, which I don't usually like to do, and most artist don't...but here we go. The bodies are awkward, and parts of this are fairly unfinished. But I do really appreciate the glow this picture has, and I think narrative-wise, it was a huge success. it's now in the care of a very dear friend. The actual piece is two feet by three feet.

So, I read a really good graphic novel*** last night, it was Blankets by Craig Thompson, (blog.dootdootgarden.com/). It was VERY well drawn and very beautiful over all. It is a very honest and wonderful representation of brand new affection and doings things like that for the first time. Quite precious. I wont tell you how it ends, but I will say I kinda wish it had gone the way you want it to as you read it. Technically, Thompson is a master of contemporary paneling. He has very consistent and beautiful layouts. check it out:

***has some one made up a better phrase for that yet? Like can we call them something else? I find myself disliking the Frankenstein term "graphic novel" it's about as dry as a sac not moisture and I think the medium deserves more.

Frinke Frinkle little far

Yesterday, our little boy ferret had to be put down. I took him to the vet to get some lethargy check out and what we thought was swallowed foreign object that had perforated his intestine, was actually a whole lot of cancer and lymphoma. Frank would not have mad it into the night in his condition, but didn't suffer at all through his life. He was just one of those predisposed ferrets who would become a tumor machine. We loved that tumor machine so so very much. He still had a place in all of our hearts. Rest in peace Franky boy.
Yesterday was a hard day.

Last fall I started to get into paper cutting and have kept doing it for several different projects.
This is one of those projects.
In my illustration class we had to choose a myth from another culture and illustrate it. I chose the Maori creation myth.
I am not a Maori person, and do not intend to represent the Maori people, these images are made by a small, white, canadian girl. They are inspired by the carvings and motifs in Maori art but do not intend to copy them. I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't want to speak for something that isn't mine.
Anyways. Something that is mine are these papercuts...they are 11x17 inches and after a friend asked me to time...on average they take about 6 hours or more each. I really shouldn't have timed myself...

That's the way we do it.

These are photos of a steampunk papercraft rabbit I made for the steampunk symposium art show hosted at the Fall tattooing in Vancouver! One of several pieces I'll show you soon.
this rabbit went through much peril in it's contruction. Originally it was smaller, and originally it was sitting. Then it morphed into a paper sculpture that was to be mounted and running in a glas globe(first image), but, when the rabbit was al well and crafted, she didn't fit. So she made her home in a shadow box with scrap paper and wire and that's where she stayed.
Now she lives in a private collection somewhere I do not know.

Dixie was a proud rabbit of the United Hare Postal Service.

One of my projects for a class is to recreate a historic piece. My instructor picked the artist for my class, and we were lucky cause she picked Hieronomyus Bosch. If you don't know who he is, he's a wicked dutch master, look im up.
SO one of the one's I did was from his piece the temptation of St. Anthony:

I will start this the way I always do;

I have been so busy!

I made this scary dood and the little forest he lives in.
He'll eat you if you go out on your own!

He's made out of plasicine and air hardening natural clay painted with acrylic. The setting is a hodgepodge of other things. If you like this sort of deal, you should checkout Red Nose Blog by Red Nose Studios. His site is AMAZING. I want to get down with his brain. Amazing.

Apathy and the Whales

I think if anyone ever read more than one entry in my journals, they'd realize that Titles are not usually related.
The same goes for this one. I just think Apathy is a cute name for a girl...who likes to live with a pod of whales....

Who am I? Well I don't know...

I do stuff.

I go to a certain University, and walk on giant streets of cloth.

I 'splore the trees.

I belong to a rad collective.

I'm the crazy old man who runs the goat circus down the road.

I turn into a fruit eating ferret by night.

This was a huge amount of time, that I'm not sure was spent efficiently....we'll see how it plays out. Who I am does not fit into pictures of my life. This is what I have learned.

As an alternate project for Illustration, I made little card board cut outs of me and my housemates. With out any context, I am a peculiar girl.

Ah yes, the days when I was made of paper.

I am very excited that friends of mine are moving. I can mail them letters. I do like to send letters once in a while.

Catfish Cemetary

School is crazier than a cat that only eats jello. More crazy than that. Crazy busy.
I have however been producing some neato things with this crazy-business.

I'm taking a print media class called book media where we learn the development of tradition and non traditional bound and 3D folded books. It is an excellent class. It's a combination of art and craft at just the right amount of each.

So I have pictures to show you.

So the concept of this project is about space relating to the reader. It can be looked upon from the front to get a layered distant effect, or unfolded from the side, to show distance, and wide open spaces. And everything is underlined. Not so sure why.

The whole thing is made of Canson C-Cream drawing paper. It's kind of like a thin bristol. It was cut with a exacto with a pointed tip, and i did not count the hours.

In the first picture you can see the case that is fits in. If you look reaaaaally carrefully, you can see the small deer head that is hlding the case together. It is very faint because it is clear.
There are also little things hidden in some of the pages, like the antlers in the next image.

There are more pictures to show, but my images are processed by evil spirits of bad formatting, so I'll shoe them later.

that's why I love zombie walks, but, this year I didn't get to go because of work. It broke my heart into a million pieces.

Hello!

I started working on a series of doodles of ladies I know, because I figure, i don't have to make up people to draw all the time, because I know so many great ones anyway.
So here is Karli and Taryn. they are a couple of super great ladies. I drew them together cause I can't imagine them being apart.
Also, they own so many cats.

So I've been doin some stuff when I'm at home and I have time.
we had a fathers day card making party at the loft tonight, which was loads of fun, you will see how awesome my card turned out! it have a fish on a bike.
I've also been working on something big for uriel and catherine to show them I love them. I want to finish before I go to kelowna to visit my parents. but there is lots to be done. It's going to be good.
Also, I've been arting a little.
I drew this picture of a cougar and a young medical student:

I really like the way his face turned out....she gives me the heeeeebs.....so I don't think this will get finished
I just don't really dig the way it went.

I am also working on a comic with the working title "night lights" that I posted somewhere else earlier.

BIRTH DAY WHALE

So yesterday was my brother's 21st bithday! yay!
SO
since he and I are now residing in different cities due to schooling, I couldn't manage (because I am a terrible sibling) to get a card mailed so it would get there on time!
SO
instead, I crafted up this custom template so that he can print and fold a card like no other!
I learned the basic whale oragami from several sites that all had the same method, afterwords I even found a pattern for what I had already done...but much creepier.

here he is folded in black and white!

yeah, so DIY birthday cards are like...the new vinyl toy. People should do these up more often! it's a fold able, non-conventional canvas shape design challenge!

yaaarr. behold! Captain Puppypants the Scourge! no, not the big hairy guy that looks like Eugene Hutz, the fierce little lad to the left of center.

Also, I heard about this guy that goes around the country entering fishing derby's and then cheats to win by sacking a giant fake fish he carts around!
Couldn't be this guy though, I mean...look at him. He is legit. Look at that victory jig, he couldn't have cheated.

This one is all water colour on paper.
I did it all with layers and whatnot, I've found that yellow is a good wash for making things 'pop'.

Have you ever heard of the mermaid problem? Aparently is have plagued artists and writers for centuries. This is done in ink then coloured in photoshop.

And my personal favorite, a fisherman and his little fishing friend. watercolour, ink and photoshop!

So that is the best of what i've been up to. I am working on filling up this blog based on my other blog on livejournal. I'm moving all of the content over to cross-post onto this one, which will be my "professional" blog that appears on my business cards
